Thieves Stole an NVIDIA-Branded Trailer. They Found 20 Tons of Sand Instead

A strange theft in California has gone viral in the tech world.

Two trailers belonging to autonomous-trucking company PlusAI were reportedly stolen from outside the company’s facility in Fremont, California. One of the trailers prominently carried both PlusAI and NVIDIA branding. But there was one problem for the thieves , the trailers weren’t carrying NVIDIA GPUs, servers or other expensive AI hardware. They were carrying sand.

20,000 pounds of sand in each trailer

Each trailer was loaded with approximately 20,000 pounds (around 9,000 kg) of sand, making the combined cargo roughly 40,000 pounds, or 18 tonnes. PlusAI uses sand as a simulated cargo load during testing. The weight helps the company recreate the conditions of a trailer carrying real freight while developing and testing autonomous-trucking technology. So instead of finding a valuable shipment of AI hardware, the thieves apparently found two trailers full of sand.

How were the trailers found?

The theft was discovered after the trailers disappeared from the company’s facility overnight. Interestingly, the trailers were later spotted near another workplace by an acquaintance of a PlusAI executive. The company was alerted, and authorities were contacted. Police subsequently recovered both trailers. Reports said the sand was still inside.

As of the latest reports, no arrests had been announced and the investigation was ongoing.

Why did the trailers have an NVIDIA logo?

PlusAI works with NVIDIA on autonomous-driving technology and AI software, which explains the joint branding on one of the trailers.
It has been suggested that the NVIDIA branding may have attracted the thieves because NVIDIA hardware is extremely valuable. However, authorities have not publicly established that the logo was the reason for the theft, so that part remains speculation.

The bigger story: AI hardware is becoming a theft target

While this particular incident ended with a surprisingly worthless haul, it highlights a much bigger problem. AI infrastructure — including GPUs, servers, networking equipment and other data-center hardware — has become extremely valuable as companies invest billions in AI. Supply-chain security firm Overhaul has tracked more than $150 million in AI-equipment cargo losses, while theft involving data-center and computing equipment has increased since 2024. In this case, however, the thieves simply picked the wrong cargo. They were apparently looking at NVIDIA and thinking “GPUs.” What they got was sand.
