Anthropic has launched Claude Haiku 5.5, a new AI model designed to deliver fast responses at a significantly lower cost. Announced on October 7, the model targets developers and businesses that need to run AI-powered applications at scale without spending heavily on every request.
The company describes Haiku 5.5 as its fastest, cheapest and most capable small model yet. It is designed for tasks such as summarising documents, classifying data, answering customer queries and assisting with browser-based workflows.
But the biggest headline is its pricing: Anthropic says Haiku 5.5 costs around 75% less to run on average than its predecessor, Claude Haiku 4.5.
What Is Claude Haiku 5.5?
Claude Haiku 5.5 is the latest addition to Anthropic’s Claude model family. While larger models are often used for complex reasoning and demanding tasks, Haiku is designed for situations where speed, efficiency and cost matter most.
For example, a company running thousands of customer-support conversations or processing large volumes of documents needs a model that can respond quickly without making every interaction expensive.
Haiku 5.5 is designed for these high-volume workloads. Anthropic also says it can work alongside more powerful models, including Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Opus 5.5, as a subagent handling smaller tasks during a larger workflow.
Claude Haiku 5.5 Pricing: How Cheap Is It?
Pricing is one of the model’s biggest selling points.
For API prompts containing up to 100,000 tokens, Haiku 5.5 costs:
- Input: $0.10 per million tokens
- Output: $0.50 per million tokens
For prompts above 100,000 tokens, the rates increase to $0.50 per million input tokens and $2.50 per million output tokens.
Anthropic says the new model is priced 90% lower than Haiku 4.5 for requests up to 100,000 tokens. Across workloads, accounting for differences in token usage, the company estimates an average cost reduction of approximately 75%.
This could make a meaningful difference for developers building AI chatbots, automated research tools, document-processing systems and other applications that make frequent model calls.
What Can Claude Haiku 5.5 Do?
Anthropic is positioning the model for practical, repetitive and speed-sensitive tasks rather than only complex reasoning.
1. Coding and AI Agents
Haiku 5.5 can act as a subagent alongside larger Claude models. In an AI coding workflow, for example, it could handle smaller tasks while a more capable model manages the broader problem.
2. Summarisation and Data Processing
The model is designed to summarise content, compact long conversations, classify information and handle database-related queries. These tasks are common in business applications and internal AI tools.
3. Customer Support
Businesses can use lightweight AI models to power customer-support assistants that need to respond quickly and handle large numbers of requests.
4. Browser and Computer Use
Anthropic says Haiku 5.5 is suited to speed-sensitive browser and computer-use workflows. These capabilities can help AI agents interact with software and websites to complete tasks.
However, the results will depend on the application, the tools available to the agent and the complexity of the task.
Is Claude Haiku 5.5 Better Than Sonnet and Opus?
Not necessarily for every task.
Anthropic’s Claude family serves different needs. Haiku 5.5 focuses on speed and cost efficiency, while Sonnet and Opus are positioned for more demanding work.
For a simple classification task or short summary, using a lightweight model may be more economical than calling a larger model. For complicated analysis, however, a more capable model may still be the better choice.
The practical approach for developers is to test models on their own workloads instead of assuming that one model will be best for everything.
Why This Launch Matters
The AI industry is not competing only on model intelligence anymore. Price, speed and the ability to run large numbers of AI requests efficiently are becoming equally important.
A model that delivers useful results at a much lower cost can make AI agents and automated workflows more practical for startups, developers and businesses.
Haiku 5.5 also gives developers another option: use a larger model for complex decisions and a smaller, cheaper model for routine steps. That approach could help reduce costs across multi-step AI applications.
